Autograph letter to Lambrianos Groutas
Haynes-Smith was Lord High Commissioner of Cyprus from 1898 to 1904. His letter to Lambrianos Groutas is dated from Government House, Nicosia, 4 January 1900, and it concerns the establishment of a college to train Orthodox clergy in Cyprus. He writes to Groutas as president of the Cypriot Brotherhood of Alexandria, in an attempt to raise money for this purpose. The Cypriot Brotherhood of Alexandria funded many Greek Orthodox schools and supported other forms of education. For example, the Brotherhood supported Christodoulos Konstantinides in his efforts to establish Cyprus’ first newspaper in 1878.
