Description De L’Égypte ...

Περιγραφή

This tremendous work is a tribute to the scientists and scholars who accompanied Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt. It represents 30 years of collective effort, as well as untold suffering and privation in Egypt. When Napoleon decided to invade Egypt, he determined to take a commission to carry out research in the country. Most of the members were civil engineers, surveyors and cartographers, but the commission included architects, scientists and philologists. The arts contingent included D. V. Denon, who published his own account of his adventures in Egypt, the artist André Dutertre, H. J. Redouté, brother of the more famous Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the architect Charles-Louis Balzac and the musician G. A. Villoteau. R. N. D. Desgenettes, chief medical officer of the commission, published his own account of the medical problems facing the French army in Egypt, mainly the plague. The scientists included the mathematician Gaspard Monge, the chemist C. L. Berthollet, the zoologist E. G. Saint-Hilaire, the mineralogist D. G. de Dolomieu and Nicolas Conté, inventor and balloonist, but in fact a jack-of-all-trades, who later invented a machine to engrave the illustrations for this work. During the three years that the French were in Egypt, the members of the commission amassed a tremendous amount of information. On the return of the expedition Conté was appointed head of the committee to oversee publication of the research. Work on the publication began in 1802, but the first volumes did not appear until 1809, and the work was not completed until 1822.
