Medical manual in Greek, ‘Ιατροσοφικόν’.
This very interesting medical manual or ‘iatrosophikon’ (‘iatrosophion’) was written ca 1630 by someone, probably a monk, who studied in a monastery on Mt Athos. It belonged to Konstantinos, son of Papaloizos of Psimolofou. This name is associated with Cyprus; Psimolofou is a village near Nicosia. One of the features of the anonymous medical manual in the Ioannou collection is the fact that certain prescriptions are written in code. These sections discuss women’s diseases and treatments.
The ‘iatrosophia’, or vernacular medical manuals, played a large part in the spread of medical information among the general populace of Greece and the Levant. They contain accounts of herbs, collections of formulae for medicines, prescriptions for treatments and discussions of medical complaints.
