Manuscript documents concerning the degrees and orders of the Philike Etaireia, 1820-1821.
Rare. Few documents containing the symbols of the Philike Etaireia have been preserved. The secret Society, which was established throughout Europe to promote the liberation of the Greeks from Ottoman domination, had a structure similar to that of the Society of Freemasons. There were orders and degrees to which the members were elected.
One of the documents contains the steps for initiation to the degrees of ‘poimenas’ and ‘systemenos’. The other document contains three letters of reference, each with a sketch of its pen and ink symbol, for the degrees of ‘poimenas’, ‘hiereas’ and ‘systemenos’ for Panaghiotes Papagiannopoulos, a member of the Society. It also contains a later leaf with the coded alphabet of the Society and a decoded text of the two first ‘ephodiastika’.
