Watkins set out on his travels in 1787 with a visit to Switzerland and Italy. Watkins spent about 18 months in the Levant. On the way he travelled through the Ionian Islands and the Aegean, returning by way of Smyrna to Athens and then to Megara, Corinth and Patras.
