Προσωρινὴ Διοίκησις τῆς Ἑλλάδος ...

Περιγραφή

An interesting manuscript throwing light on the attempts of the Greek government to raise money during the War of Independence.

Ioseph Karones was born in Tripolis and studied in Dimitsana. He became Bishop of Androusa, Messenia, in 1806, having previously served in Smyrna with Bishop Gregorios, who later became Patriarch of Constantinople and was martyred at the beginning of the Greek Revolution. Ioseph joined the Philike Etaireia in 1819. He was imprisoned by Mehmet Salih, governor of Tripolis, and after the fall of Tripolis he became an active participant in the Revolution. In 1822 he was named Minister of Religion in the provisionary government, holding this post until 1825. He fought with the Greek forces against Ibrahim Pasha in the Morea and in 1827 he took part in the congress of Troizene. This proclamation is addressed by him, as Minister of Religion, to the Greeks living in Europe and calling upon them for their support.
