Travels Through Part of Europe, Asia Minor, The Islands of the Archipelago ...
First edition in English, translated from the Dutch edition of Leiden, 1757-1758. This work contains the accounts of two separate travellers, J. A. van Egmond, diplomat and envoy to the court of the King of Naples who travelled in the Levant in 1720, and J. Heyman, professor of Oriental languages at the University of Leiden and vicar of the Dutch community of Smyrna from 1700 to 1706. Heyman’s nephew, Jan Willem Heyman, edited the two separate accounts into one series of letters.
The island of Cyprus is dealt with in chapter 18 of volume I. The text contains quite a lot of information on the various coastal towns, on the appearance of the Cypriots themselves, the produce of Cyprus and on the unhealthiness of the climate, especially in the areas of Larnaca and Famagusta. The plates consist of composite engravings after de Bruyn.
