Baldini has been identified by the Census of Italian 16th Century Editions (edit.16.iccu.sbn.it) with the Vittorio Baldini who was active as printer to the court of Ferrara from about 1566. He was particularly known for his music publications. The Cinque Canti deals with the War of Cyprus and the Battle of Lepanto. Each canto is accompanied by a woodcut vignette. It was the loss of Cyprus that led to the creation of the Holy League or Sacra Lega, and to the subsequent naval battle between the Holy League and the Ottoman fleet in October 1571 near the Curzolari islands, known as the Battle of Lepanto.
