The true first edition was published by Antoine Lambin in 1691 in 4to as Voyage d’Orient and is rare.
In 1685 the Jesuit Avril set out to find an overland route to China. He travelled via Cyprus to Syria, eastern Asia Minor and Persia, reaching Astrachan, where the Russian authorities refused to allow him to cross their territories. He turned back to Constantinople and returned to France via Moldavia. The plates and the vignettes were engraved by a member of the 17th-century Vallet family of engravers.
