Libro Di Benedetto Bordone ...
First edition of this famous work, the second printed isolario, and the first to be printed in the 16th century. It was reprinted several times in the 16th century. Bordone’s work is of particular importance since it is the first to include maps of islands from the New World. Approximately 80 of the maps are dedicated to Greece and to the islands of the Greek archipelago. For this part of his work, Bordone was indebted to the work of Bartolommeo dalli Sonetti, who produced the first printed isolario in Venice ca 1485. Although Bordone is now known for his cartographical work, during his lifetime he was best known as a miniaturist and book illustrator. The Libro, or Isolario, is his only extant cartographical work, published at the end of his life, but he was deeply interested in the geographical discoveries and the cartographical developments that took place during his lifetime.
