This edition was published for Stochove’s friends. Stochove set out on his travels to the Levant in 1630 from Paris, in company with a group of friends from Rouen, including Robert Fauvel, Fermanel and Baudouin de Launay. They reached Cyprus in 1631, after visiting Smyrna and Constantinople. The group then went on to Alexandretta, Aleppo, Baghdad, the Holy Land, Egypt and Mt Sinai. Stochove returned to Bruges on 1 September 1633. His account of Cyprus gives details about the way the Greeks lived during the first decades following the occupation of the island by the Ottomans.
