Constantinople Ancient and Modern ...
In 1794 Dallaway travelled overland to Constantinople in company with Robert Liston and his entourage; he had been appointed chaplain to Liston’s embassy to the Porte. Other members of the party were the botanist John Sibthorp, author of the Flora Graeca, and the painter Gaetano Mercati. Dallaway, who spent about 18 months in Constantinople, travelled fairly extensively while he was in Turkey and he undertook the journey to the Troad with Mercati and J. B. S. Morritt. Mercati contributed illustrations to both Dallaway’s and Morritt’s publications on Troy. He also was the first editor of the works and letters of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu.
