This is the first geographical work of any scientific merit and stresses statistics rather than descriptive writing. It was translated into French, English and Italian. The first edition of the entire work, with eleven parts on Europe and one part on Asia, seems to be from 1754-1792. After Büsching’s death, further parts on Asia, Africa and America were published.
The vignettes depict the same subject on all titles; those on the titles of volumes 2 and 3 are by Johanna Dorothea Philippin-Sysangin. On the other volumes they are by Christian Friedrich Fritzsch. Büsching’s encyclopaedic description of the world ran to many editions. At least eight were published by Bohn.
