Cyprus on the Crossroads of Travellers and Map-makers from the 15th to 20th Century

The 1st International Conference of the Sylvia Ioannou Foundation entitled "Cyprus on the crossroads of travellers and map-makers from the 15th to 20th century", was held on 18-20 October 2012 at the Museum of Cycladic Art, in Athens.

The aim of the Conference was to highlight the treasure trove of historical documents devoted to Cyprus and to study their origins and transformations, as well as the consistencies and contrast of the story of how they were apperceived and imprinted. On the occasion of Cyprus assuming the E.U. Presidency (July-December 2012), the thematic sections were:

  • The Images of Cyprus in Early Modern Times: Threads of Tradition
  • Changing Images and Points of Correspondence:
    Ottoman Domination and Western Penetration
  • Contrasts and Challenges: Empire, Colonialism and Nation
  • Cartographical and Travellers' Collections in the Digital Age
