Presentation of items from the Collection to postgraduate students

Athens, 28 May 2024

On the initiative of Professor Julia Chatzipanagioti-Sangmeister, nine postgraduate students from the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Cyprus travelled to Athens for an educational trip. The aim of this trip was to visit museums, libraries, archives and cultural institutions related to their studies and research on Modern Greek literature and history.

The Sylvia Ioannou Foundation organised a presentation of select manuscripts, books and maps from its Collection by the historical bibliographer Leonora Navari. The students had the opportunity to be part of a scientific presentation based on items of bibliographical, typographical and historical interest. Artemis Scutari, Chairperson of the Foundation, referred to historical cartography, presenting select examples of European and Arabic maps depicting the island of Cyprus and rare items of Modern Greek history, such as Rigas’ ‘Map of Greece’ (M.0287) and manuscript documents concerning the degrees and orders of the Philike Etaireia (B.1316), from the Foundation’s Collection.

Some of the items presented were publications by Drummond (1754 edition, B.0089), Ferriol (1714 edition, B.2014), Ludolphus von Sudheim (1477 edition, B.1711) and Ptolemaeus (1482 edition, B.2044), as well as maps by Moullart-Sanson (1718 edition, M.0872, and 1718 edition, M.0010).
