Tavernier spent almost a year in Constantinople in 1631. Apparently, much of his information on the Seraglio was obtained from two former employees of the Sultan—one a Frenchman and the other a Sicilian. Both had worked in the Serrail for many years, and Tavernier assures his readers of their accuracy.
