Savile was a career officer in the British Army. He served in the Intelligence Branch of the Horse Guards during the Afghan War, 1878-1879. In 1895 he held the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. Savile included a bibliography of works on Cyprus, which he used to compile his book. The map was prepared under the direction of Captain G. E. Grover.
