Breydenbach, dean of Mainz Cathedral, went on pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1483, accompanied by his artist, Erhard Reuwich, and by Johann von Solms and Philipp von Bicken. The group reached Venice in mid-May 1483 and met up with other pilgrims, including Felix Fabri. The party continued on to Mt Sinai. Breydenbach returned to Mainz in the autumn of 1484.
