Description

Palerne spent two years travelling in the Levant, from 1581 to 1583. He spent a month in Cyprus; see pp. 327-337. His information on Egypt is especially of value. Also of particular interest is the ‘petit dictionnaire’ at the end, which is a comparative lexicon of words useful for travellers in French, Italian, Greek, Turkish, ‘Moresque’ (i.e. Arabic) and ‘Esclavon’, either Serbo-Croatian or Bulgarian, since Palerne returned to France overland through the Balkans to Ragusa (now Dubrovnik) from whence he took ship for Venice.
