Extracted from volume I of Awnsham and John Churchill’s A Collection of Voyages and Travels, 1704. Edited and translated Christoph Donauer from the diaries of Baumgarten. Baumgarten’s interests were wide-ranging; he visited Corfu and Crete, where he referred to the ‘Labyrinth’, probably the Minoan palace, which he described at some length. He spent a fairly long period in Cyprus, from 8 February to 28 March 1508. He was one of the first Europeans to see the ruins of Baalbec.
