Ludwig Salvator travelled continuously between 1870 and 1914, living mainly on board his yacht, the Nixe. Levkosia is his sixth published work. Others of his works related to Greece include accounts of the Gulf of Corinth, Santorini, Ithaca, Zakynthos and Paxos.
