The Sylvia Ioannou Chair for Digital Humanities has developed postgraduate programmes (MSc. and Ph.D.) for Digital Heritage and Landscape Archaeology at the University of Cyprus. In addition, the Chair aims to produce research projects in the field of Digital Humanities.
The Chair is funded by the Sylvia Ioannou Foundation, wishing to honour the multi-faceted contribution of its founder. The staff comprises of a professor in charge of the Chair, a postdoctoral researcher and a doctoral student. The signing ceremony of the agreement was held in the Senate Conference Room of the University of Cyprus on Thursday 23 November 2017. The Sylvia Ioannou Chair began operation in September 2019. Professor in charge is Apostolos Sarris.
Among the activities of the Chair, the Lab of Digital Humanities GeoInformatics (DigHumanities GeoInfo Lab) was established aiming to the application of cutting-edge technologies in Landscape Archaeology, Environmental Archaeology, Digital History, Monument Monitoring, and Cultural Heritage Risk Assessment and Modelling. The Lab is involved in projects within the domains of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Geoinformatics (Geophysical Prospection, Satellite Remote Sensing, Aerial Photography, and Photogrammetry), computational and statistical methods, 3D reconstructions, machine learning, and AI, etc. Research of the Lab expands on an international level with emphasis on Cyprus, E. Mediterranean, and the Balkans, providing a hands-on experience and expert tools to students and professionals.
