Participation in Dr. Maria Iacovou's lecture at The National Archives

The National Archives, London, 17 October 2019

On Thursday 17 October 2019, the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and The National Archives hosted a lecture titled ‘An unintentional colonial gift: Herbert Horatio Kitchener and the antiquity of the toponymic history of Cyprus’ by Dr. Maria Iacovou, Professor of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archaeology at the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Cyprus.

Throughout the lecture the maps produced by Kitchener and related documents held by The National Archives were displayed through a live demonstration of the online application of Kitchener’s map. The application is based on the results of the ‘Creation of a Cartographic Database and online application of the geographic information in Kitchener’s Map of Cyprus (1885 edition)’ Research Programme, conducted by the Department of Geography at Harokopio University, Athens in 2016, and funded by the Sylvia Ioannou Foundation.

The event was held by The National Archives, the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and the Cyprus High Commission to the United Kingdom.
